Pope takes another short holiday in Castel Gandolfo

While what is probably the last heatwave of the summer is approaching in Rome, Pope Leo XIV is once again drawn to the coolness of the Albanian mountains.

As the Vatican News portal reports, the head of the Church plans to leave the Vatican on Wednesday after the general audience in order to move to Castel Gandolfo for a few days.

The local bishop of Albano, Vincenzo Viva, was the first to reveal the news.

He did not reveal whether the Pope intends to stay for a whole week. However, it is assumed that Leo XIV will be back in the Vatican for the general audience on 20 August at the latest.

As with his first stay from 6 to 22 July, he will be staying in the Villa Barberini and not in the actual papal summer palace. This had been converted into a museum by Leo's predecessor Francis.

Several dates

Pope Leo XIV will not be taking a real holiday during his second stay in Castel Gandolfo either.

Among other things, a church service is planned on the feast day of the Assumption (15 August), also known as Ferragosto in Rome.

On Sunday (17 August), the Pope will also celebrate a mass in the church of Santa Maria della Rotonda in Albano with the poor who are cared for by the local Caritas organisation. He will then hold the traditional midday prayer in Castel Gandolfo in the town's main square.

This will be followed by a large group lunch at the "Borgo Laudato sí" centre in the gardens of Villa Barberini.
