Cardinal Zuppi wants to read out the names of the dead children in Gaza

Italian Cardinal Matteo Zuppi has announced an unusual form of protest against the war in the Gaza Strip.

He told the Italian newspaper "La Stampa" (Sunday) that he is planning to publicly read out the names of all the children who died in the Gaza war on 14 August in Marzabotto, the memorial site of the largest SS massacre in Italy.

According to Zuppi, all children who were killed by Hamas on 7 October 2023 - and all those who died in the Gaza Strip afterwards - will be named.

In the Marzabotto massacre, SS troops shot more than 770 civilians in their battle against Italian partisans from 29 September to 1 October 1944. 213 of them were children under the age of 13.

They are known by name and their murder was documented.

The "Monte Sole Memorial Park" was established near Marzabotto to commemorate the massacres.

Zuppi justified the action on the Gaza war with the words: "We want to remember the names in order to honour every single child and take them out of anonymity. They all have the same dignity."

Zuppi (69) is Archbishop of Bologna and the Monte Sole memorial park is located in his archdiocese.

The chairman of the Italian Bishops' Conference has repeatedly acted as the Pope's special envoy for dialogue between Russia and Ukraine over the past three years.
