Cardinal Krajewski condemns protests against migrants in Poland

The Polish Curia Cardinal Konrad Krajewski has condemned protests against migrants in his home country.

The demand "Poland for the Poles" means "there is no place for Jesus", he said at a mass in Rome for the Polish participants of the Catholic World Youth Meeting. Jesus himself had sought refuge in Egypt as a refugee and had not been turned away.

The central Polish archdiocese of Łódź published a video of Krajewski's sermon on Thursday evening.

The demonstrations a fortnight ago in many Polish cities had hit him hard, said the head of the papal charity service.

The far-right party Confederation had called for the protests against the admission of migrants.

Its presidential candidate Sławomir Mentzen received almost 15 per cent of the vote in May.

"Poland after Poland"?

Krajewski pointed out that ten million Poles were living abroad. One million of them alone had gone to Chicago to earn their living there and had been accepted in the US metropolis.

"And in all these countries they could say: 'Poland to Poland', Italy is for Italians and America is for Americans. That's how you can speak if you apply the logic of the world, but not the logic of the Gospel," said the cardinal.

He emphasised that St. Peter's Square in the Vatican is surrounded by two colonnades; they symbolise the arms of Christ, who welcomes all. Pope Francis (2013-2025) had showers and a hairdressing salon set up there for the homeless and provided them with free medication from the Vatican pharmacy. The aim was to restore people's dignity. The Church does not exclude anyone, Krajewski emphasised.

Earlier, the Archbishop of Łódź, Cardinal Grzegorz Ryś, had already clearly criticised hatred and "fear of foreigners".

The Catholic Church teaches "that every person has the right to choose a place to live" and to be respected there in their faith and culture, he emphasised in a pastoral letter that was read out in the churches of his archdiocese.

And: "Christianity is not a tribal religion."
