Plans to carry out alterations and erect an extension to a woman’s monastery chapel in South Roscommon have been lodged with Roscommon County Council.
The Orthodox Monastery of the Life-Giving Spring, located at Raghrabeg, Shannonbridge, Co Roscommon, are seeking permission to carry out the works.
The plans also include the installation of a secondary waste water treatment unit with polishing filter along with all ancillary site works.
The Monastery of the Life-Giving Spring is a women’s monastery established in 2019 by the Romanian Orthodox Church.
On its website, the church states the monastery is open to anyone, of any nationality, language, race, or age and the language used during the services will be, depending on the congregation, Romanian and English, with some Greek, Russian, and even Irish.
The website outlines that the monastery is home to two nuns and welcomes pilgrims throughout the year, subject to availability of places.
County planners are due to make a decision on the development by September 8th.
