Leo XIV honoured with papal route and large sculpture

The government in Peru has given the go-ahead for the "Pope Leo XIV Routes" tourism project.

The route is to include a total of 38 tourist attractions in four provinces. Robert Prevost left his mark there as a missionary, pastor and bishop.

The "Caminos del Papa León XIV" project is a joint initiative of the Peruvian government, regional and local administrations, the Catholic Church and the private sector.

The government in Lima has provided the equivalent of around nine million euros for the development.

6.50 metre statue

Meanwhile, local politicians announced that the city of Chiclayo wanted to honour the head of the church with a 6.50 metre tall sculpture.

It is to be erected at the entrance to the city and become a new landmark.

The artwork will be financed by the regional government of Lambayeque, local governor Jorge Pérez Flores is quoted as saying.

Construction will begin in the coming months.

The religious Robert Prevost, now Pope Leo XIV, worked in Peru for many years, including eight years as Bishop of Chiclayo.

Since 2015, he has held Peruvian as well as US citizenship.
