Date set for eviction of the convent of the schismatic ex-nuns

The Belorado convent, which is currently still inhabited by schismatic ex-nuns, is to be evacuated on 12 September.

The date was announced on Thursday by the court of Briviesca, according to the Archdiocese of Burgos (Spain).

A hearing was scheduled for the end of July before the final eviction.

The attempt by the former nuns to reject the judge as biased had failed.

There are five older nuns in the convent who did not join the schism. Once again, the archdiocese emphasised that the appeals do not relate to them.

"Due to their advanced age and poor state of health, these nuns have been the subject of particular concern on the part of the Pontifical Commissioner and the Administrative Commission from the outset," the statement reads.

The necessary care and nursing will be taken over immediately by the Federation of Poor Clares "Nuestra Señora de Aránzazu", to which they belong, as soon as access to the convent is possible.

Ex-nuns have already failed in court several times

The archdiocese of Burgos had already filed an eviction suit in September.

The eviction was originally scheduled for the end of January, but was delayed due to appeals and lawsuits by the former nuns.

In February and June, the women lost in court. They had tried to convert the convent into a civil law association in order to retain control.

They also wanted to reject the administration of the convent by the Archbishop of Burgos, who had been appointed administrator by the Vatican.

The conflict surrounding the Poor Clares of Belorado has continued to escalate in recent months.

In May 2024, the sisters published a manifesto in which they renounced the Catholic Church and declared that they would not recognise any popes after Pius XII.

In the course of the conflict, they joined various alleged schismatic bishops and were excommunicated due to their schism.

All attempts at conciliation by the papal commissioner Mario Iceta failed.
