Police pick up bishop for questioning – suspicion of corruption

In Peru, the chancellor of the diocese of Puno is alleged to have sold valuable religious objects such as chalices, paintings and jewellery that are considered cultural heritage.

According to Peruvian media reports, Alex Anibal Cano Arce is the main suspect in current investigations into money laundering and embezzlement.

As his bishop, Jorge Carrion Pavlich, had let two summonses lapse, the police have now picked him up for questioning.

In addition to the sale of the items, the chancellor is also allegedly involved in illegal property transactions, including the purchase of 300 hectares of land.

It is suspected that there is a lithium deposit in the area.

The diocese of Puno is not the only one where valuable properties are missing.

The suspect is accused of having acted in a similar way in other dioceses.

The investigators therefore want to question other bishops.
