Retired garda convicted

A retired garda who was convicted on three counts of sexual assault by a jury at Castlebar Circuit Criminal Court last February has been given a six-year suspended jail sentence.

The Mayo man, who cannot be named to protect the identity of the victim, pleaded not guilty to the charges, which occurred between June 1, 1994, and September 20, 2000.

The incidents occurred when the female victim holidayed at the defendant’s home.

He received two years on each of the three counts, to be served consecutively.

The six years were suspended provided he entered a bond to keep the peace and be of good behaviour for five years and he is not convicted of any assault offence – sexual or otherwise – for five years. He was also placed on the sexual offenders’ register.

The judgement was passed by Judge Donagh McDonagh at Castlebar Circuit Court.
