Egyptian Christians condemn controversial film on Muhammad

The spokesman for the Catholic Church in Egypt has told the Fides news agency that “the Catholic Church, the Orthodox and Protestant issued a statement in Arabic” against the American-made film Innocence of Muslims, which has sparked violent protests in Libya, Egypt, and elsewhere.

“The statement affirms that Christians are familiar with the desecration of what is most sacred to them,” said Father Rafic Greiche. One recalls for example how in certain TV shows or in some form of advertising Christ or the Pope [is] represented. We are the first to have experienced this kind of desecration of one’s own religious symbols and are the first to respect Islam and all religions with their symbols.”

Father Greiche added that “many Christians” are taking part in demonstrations against the film in Cairo.
