Pope Leo appoints woman to 'scriptor Latinus' Vatican Library

Andreina Rita (60) has been appointed "scriptor Latinus" in the Apostolic Library by Pope Leo XIV. 

This was announced by the Vatican Press Office on Thursday. 

In this capacity, the Italian book expert will in future be responsible for the development and preservation of the Latin writings in the Vatican.

In addition to her, there is another "scriptor latinus" from Italy in the library of the Pope with the clergyman Giacomo Cardinali (48) appointed on the 3rd. April 2025.

With more than 150,000 manuscript volumes and hundreds of thousands of other archival materials, including the presumably oldest Bible manuscript, the Apostolic Library is world famous. 

The first woman there from 1996 to 2018, the Austrian Christine Maria Grafinger was the manuscript collection. 

She has been a member of the Pontifical Committee of History since 2022.
