Bishops: Church in Germany and Poland facing similar tasks

Despite all the differences, the Church in Germany and Poland face similar pastoral challenges.

The bishops of the two countries came to this view at their annual meeting, as the German Bishops’ Conference announced on Thursday.

The focus of the talks was on the topic of church development in both countries.

The meeting was held from 28 to 30. April in Plock, one of the oldest episcopal cities in Poland.

In addition to the host, Bishop Szymon Stulkowski (Plock), the co-chairs of the contact group of both bishops' conferences, Archbishop Stanislaw Budzik (Lublin) and the bishops Bertram Meier (Augsburg), Wolfgang Ipolt (Görlitz) and Tadeusz Litynski (Zielona Góra) took part.

The contact group was established in the 1990s to intensify the exchange of both countries.

Learning from each other

During the exchange, the German bishops provided, among other things, the 6th. Church membership inquiry before.

Poland's representatives spoke of the impact of demographic development in the country and the impact on Catholic schools and universities.

The church must find answers in both countries to growing problems in financing its tasks, it said.

Meier praised the exchange and called it helpful for both sides.

Despite differences, one can learn from each other, according to the Augsburg bishop.
