A 58-year-old priest was arrested Wednesday for allegedly setting fire to a forested area in Markopoulo, eastern Attica.
Security cameras reportedly captured the man leaving his car and walking into the wooded area shortly before the blaze began.
The priest told police he had stopped on his way back from Hamolia beach to destroy some church documents by burning them.
The fire spread to surrounding vegetation but was quickly contained.
He was fined 1,687.50 euros and remains in custody ahead of a court appearance Thursday.
