Blood miracle of St Januarius occurs again

The blood miracle of St Januarius occurred again on Friday morning in the cathedral of Naples.

According to Italian media reports, the relic of the city's patron saint, which was kept in an ampoule, liquefied at 10.07 am.

This year, Neapolitan Archbishop Domenico Battaglia used the miracle to make a political appeal.

The blood of the early Christian martyr Gennaro is mixed with the blood that is shed in Palestine.

"We could just as well show the blood of every child from Gaza here in the cathedral," said the archbishop during the service.

In his speech, he urgently called for an end to the war. He was interrupted several times by applause.

The blood miracle of San Gennaro traditionally takes place three times a year and attracts numerous believers and onlookers. Failure to attend is considered a bad omen.

According to tradition, St Januarius was executed for his faith in 305 under Emperor Diocletian.

For centuries, the dark substance venerated as his blood has been kept in a glass jar in Naples Cathedral.

It failed to liquefy during the pandemic years of 2020 and 2021.
