Over 300 people have attended the funeral in Galway of a man who died without any known next of kin, following an appeal from his community.
Matt Laffey, of Reddington Road, Shantalla, in the city, died on 13 March.
Living alone and without a known next of kin to organise the arrangements, his funeral was delayed until today, pending the approval of a coroner.
The Laffey family had lived in the Shantalla area for a number of decades. Mr Laffey was predeceased by his parents and sister.
When arrangements for his funeral were allowed to proceed, neighbours such as Tom Lally appealed to the public to turn out for the mass at the Sacred Heart Church on Seamus Quirke Road.
"It gives everybody a lift to see a turnout for a man that lived a very quiet life and wouldn't have interacted with a lot of people," said Mr Lally.
"The appeal was very successful and anyone could be proud of the crowd that turned up for this funeral."
Keith Greaney, of Conneely Funeral Directors, said the number of people who attended showed the response for a man who was living alongside but not alone in his community.
"A lot of people had been in touch with us since he passed to see when his funeral would be arranged.
"We had to wait obviously for permission from the coroner to take care of it and you know it's been a very dignified funeral, a big turnout for a man who a lot of people knew and he seemed to do a lot of work for them," he said.
