Former HSE chief Tony O'Brien appointed Peter McVerry Trust chair

Tony O'Brien is to take up a new role with the Peter McVerry Trust

Former director general of the HSE, Tony O'Brien, has been appointed as chairperson of the Peter McVerry Trust (PMVT).

The founder of the housing and homeless charity, Fr Peter McVerry, has also informed the organisation of his intention to step down from the board at the end of June.

Fr McVerry stepped down from his role as company secretary last February, but had remained on the board.

The charity said that Fr McVerry would however continue to play a key role in the day-to-day running of the organisation.

He will have an "increased focus and emphasis on his work in the areas of advocacy, policy and fundraising," the Trust said.

Mr O'Brien was the HSE's director general from July 2013 until May 2018, but stepped down from his position following the CervicalCheck cancer controversy.

He will replace Deirdre-Ann Barr at the PMVT, who recently stepped down from the position of chair to which she was appointed in September 2020.

There have been a series of concerns about the financial management of the PMVT.

Last October, a statutory investigation by the Charities Regulator into the PMVT found failures relating to management, oversight and administration by the board.

An investigation by the regulator began in October 2023 after it had communications regarding the financial status and solvency of the charity.

In a statement this evening, the PMVT said Mr O'Brien would bring a "wealth of experience" to the role.

A spokesperson for the charity said: "This appointment represents another important step in the leadership, governance, and organisational reset we are undertaking.

"Tony O'Brien brings significant and relevant experience to Peter McVerry Trust at a pivotal time.

"Strong governance structures, supported by effective practices and procedures, are essential to ensuring we meet the highest operational and regulatory standards."

Mr O'Brien said: "From my conversations with the board and executive, it was clear that the organisation remains rooted in a deep sense of purpose, compassion, and social responsibility - true to its founding principles.

"There is also a clear and honest recognition of past governance shortcomings and a shared understanding of the need to restore trust."
