Their statement, the bishops emphasised their commitment to upholding the dignity of life from conception to its natural end.
The bishops continued, “we acknowledge the role of hospitals in caring for the sick, saving lives, and providing palliative care. However, we express our sorrow that abortion services are now being made available in these institutions, which were founded to protect and preserve life. We reaffirm the Catholic Church’s position that every human life, regardless of its stage or circumstances, has inherent value.”
“Each of us is a unique expression of God’s gift of life, with a purpose, potential, and possibility,” the statement reads. “As followers of Christ, who calls us to live life to the full, we must continue to protect and advocate for the sanctity of human life.”
The bishops also urged that hospital staff be given the freedom of conscience to refuse involvement in abortion procedures, standing in solidarity with healthcare workers who choose not to participate in such practices.
The bishops’ message further underscored the importance of families and communities in nurturing and protecting life, particularly during challenging times. They offered prayers and support for those facing unplanned pregnancies, urging that alternatives to abortion be provided.
Bishops Hayes and Duffy specifically highlighted organisations like Gianna Care and Community Connect, which offer practical and emotional support for women and families facing difficult circumstances.
“The heart of our Christian duty is to protect and care for all of life,” they wrote. “We must be alert to our responsibility to ensure that life is protected, nurtured, and given every chance to flourish.”
Bishops Hayes and Duffy also took the opportunity to commend individuals and groups who advocate for the sanctity of life through prayer and peaceful protest.
They announced the upcoming ‘March for Life’ in Dublin on 5 May, 2025, which will begin with a Mass at Newman University Church and proceed with a march through the city.
The march aims to demonstrate solidarity with the pro-life cause and encourage the continued protection of human life.
Both bishops concluded their statement by reaffirming their commitment to promoting and supporting the recognition of the sacredness of human life at every stage.
