British priest considers existence of animals in heaven possible

British priest Terry Martin believes it is possible for animals to exist in heaven

"It's certainly a very real possibility," he said in an interview with the internet portal "Religion News Service" on Tuesday.

In his book "Animals in Heaven? A Catholic Pastoral Response to Questions About Animals", he examines how animals fit into the Christian concept of creation.

The clergyman from West Sussex emphasises that he is not an academic theologian and that his analysis relates to the everyday life of a parish priest. For him, God loves everything he has created.

"Perhaps this love could go so far as to give animals a place in heaven too."

What does this mean for nutrition?

Martin is also in favour of a plant-based diet. He therefore calls on Christians to eat a vegan diet and not let animals suffer for pleasure.

For him, it doesn't fit that "we regard animals as beings with divine grace and still eat them".

In this context, he appealed to the faithful, among others, to take their role as guardians of creation seriously and to fulfil their Christian duty to care for animals and the environment.

The British priest is already a well-known face of animal protection.

In July, he was part of a campaign by the animal rights organisation PETA, which criticised bullfighting.

He also called on Pope Francis to condemn the "torture and violent killing of innocent bulls".
