Cover-up allegations against prominent Jesuit priest

Colombia's President Gustavo Petro has defended the prominent Jesuit priest Francisco de Roux in the face of an official investigation into a cover-up of abuse.

According to a report in the newspaper "El Tiempo", the head of state emphasised that the former head of a truth commission to come to terms with the country's decades-long armed conflict was a man of integrity.

De Roux deserved to be honoured for his services.

In recent weeks, accusations had been levelled against the priest that he had not passed on reports of assaults committed by another priest in the 1970s to the authorities.

However, De Roux assured in a statement that he had taken the measures possible at the time.

As the provincial of the Jesuits in Colombia at the time, he is said to have learnt of the allegations against the accused priest in 2014. He died in 2015.

Francisco de Roux is one of the best-known figures in the Catholic Church in Colombia.

For years, he led the work of the Truth Commission, which was also co-financed by Germany.

He handed over the final report shortly after Pedro's election victory a good two years ago to great international media interest.

At the time, the right-wing opposition sharply criticised both the report and the Jesuit priest, who was accused of taking a one-sided view.
