Resignation of Cardinal Schönborn expected in January

The Viennese Cardinal Christoph Schönborn is apparently retiring in January, the Archdiocese of Vienna announced on Friday.

Pope Francis is expected to be the resignation of the archbishop around his 80th birthday on the 22nd place January, it was said.

At the end of an almost 30 year service, all are invited to thank Schönborn with the divine service in the cathedral.

According to the information, the invitations for the ceremony, which will also be transmitted on television, are to be sent in the next few days.

Interested parties can also register from the end of November on the website of the Archdiocese.

Since 1995, Schönborn has held the office as Archbishop of Vienna. He has already clearly exceeded the age limit for bishops.

According to canon law, they must offer the Pope their resignation at the age of 75. He often leaves the leaders of important dioceses in office for some time.

This also applies to Francis' confidante.

A few months ago, in an interview, the Cardinal referred to the words of the Catholic Church leader: "Pope Francis officially told me that I was to be allowed to retire on my 80th birthday – this is at the beginning of 2025."

As a theologian, ecumenical and international mediator, Schönborn is one of the most distinguished representatives of the Catholic Church in the world.

From 1998 to 2020, the Dominican was chairman of the Austrian Bishops' Conference.
