In-depth investigation of abuse in schools after hundreds came forward

An in-depth statutory investigation into sexual and physical abuse of children in schools in Ireland is to be recommended by the Government after hundreds of victims came forward to share details of their abuse.

The report into the abuse was commissioned last year by Education Minister Norma Foley after several former pupils at Blackrock College in Dublin came forward alleging they were sexually abused.

While Blackrock was the catalyst for this inquiry, other schools in the Greater Dublin region and beyond also came forward.

They include former pupils at Terenure College.

Victims of the abuse there have told the Mail on multiple occasions that they believe there to be potentially as many as 700 people who could have been abused at the Dublin 6 school.

Over the last 18 months, the Mail has exposed three new alleged abusers at Terenure College. Dennis Whitty, Fr John Madden and Father Adrian Weakliam have all been accused by multiple people of being behind sexual and physical abuse there.

All three are since deceased but the victims this paper has spoken with want it on record that ‘these men terrorised children’.
