It will be the largest Coptic Church of Egypt, it will be inaugurated by
2018 in the new capital which is being built on the margin of Cairo's
metropolis, and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al Sisi will be among
its direct sponsors.
The announcement of the project was given by the
same al Sisi on the occasion of his participation in the Christmas
liturgy in the Coptic Orthodox Cathedral in Cairo, celebrated by
Patriarch Tawadros II.
Egyptian President said he had destined 100 thousand Egyptian pounds in
the first funding initiative, which involves the construction at the
same time of the largest mosque and the largest Egyptian Church in the
ambitious urban project designed to create from nothing a new city where
government and political institution offices will also be concentrated.
During his speech - report the Egyptian media - the Head of State also
confirmed the commitment to rebuild the churches damaged or destroyed in
the summer of 2013, during the riots that followed the deposition of
former Islamist President Mohammed Morsi.
This year was the third participation of President al Sisi at the
Christmas Mass in the Coptic Orthodox Cathedral.
Before him, no Head of
the Egyptian state had intervened in person in the celebration of
Christian solemnity.
