The Longford branch of ACCORD (formerly CMAC) is this year celebrating its 40th year in existence.
“ACCORD is a voluntary Catholic organisation”
explains Dolores Tiernan, Chairperson of ACCORD Longford. “In Longford,
we provide marriage counselling and pre-marriage courses.”
Other services are offered nationwide such as schools programmes for primary and secondary school students and personal awareness programmes, however Ms Tiernan, who has been with ACCORD for ten years, explains that marriage counselling and marriage preparation courses are the programmes most in demand.
She explains that the current financial climate has put “huge stress on relationships”, but adds that there are always people who require to get married, and the marriage preparation course is a requirement for those wishing to get married in the Catholic Church.
ACCORD was established in Ireland in the 60s and currently has 58 centres throughout Ireland, with 1,100 personnel working in various programmes or aspects of the agency.
In Longford, there are 15 volunteers active, with a further 3 undergoing training to facilitate pre-marriage courses.
To mark the event, a mass was celebrated by founder of ACCORD in Longford, Bishop Colm O’Reilly.
Refreshments were served after the mass with volunteers past and present celebrating the great work carried out by the agency.
ACCORD is based in the Family Centre, St. Mel’s Road Longford. Pre-marriage courses are currently booked out for the months of April and May, but there are still some places left for later months.
