Pope to repeat John XXIII’s journey to Italian city of Loreto

Pope Benedict XVI will visit Loreto (Ancona) next 4 October on the 50th anniversary of Pope John XXIII’s trip to the Marian city.

The Papal Delegate Archbishop and Prelate of Loreto, Giovanni Tonucci, officially announced the Pope’s visit today in the Holy House of Loreto.

Pope Roncalli had been the focal point of a memorable trip to Loreto, where he travelled to by train.

People from all over the world accompanied him on his train journey and thousands of faithful waited at the various stops along the way.

When he reached the city, he prayed to Our Lady of Loreto for the success of the Second Vatican Council which was to open shortly after.

Mgr. Tonucci recently invited Pope Benedict XVI to repeat his predecessor’s journey to the city.
