Benedict XVI appointed Archbishop Giuseppe Leanza as Ireland's apostolic nuncio.
The appointment was announced today by the Vatican.
Archbishop Leanza has been serving as the apostolic nuncio to Bulgaria for five years.
Giuseppe Leanza was born in Cesaro, Italy, in 1943 and ordained in 1966.
He entered the diplomatic service of the Holy See in 1972 and has served at the pontifical representations in Paraguay, Uganda, the United States and in the section for relations with states at the Vatican Secretariat of State.
In 1990 he was appointed apostolic nuncio to Haiti and a year later, was appointed apostolic pro-nuncio to Zambia and Malawi.
From there, he was appointed to Bosnia Herzegovina in 1999 and subsequently to Slovenia and Macedonia in 2002.
