After waiting more than two years for the Vatican to accept his resignation, the Rev. Carl Mengeling is stepping down as Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Lansing.
Diocesan officials will introduce Mengeling’s successor at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday.
The new bishop with be the fifth to serve in the 10-county Diocese of Lansing, which includes more than 200,000 Catholics.
Mengeling, who came to Lansing from Indiana, was ordained as bishop in January 1996.
He resigned in October 2005 when he turned 75, as Vatican policy requires. At that time, the Pope can accept or reject the resignation or, as in Mengeling’s case, simply put it on hold.
Mengeling, now 77, had surgery for bladder cancer last spring.
The surgery removed all the cancer and he did not need chemotherapy or radiation.
He returned to work after recovering from the surgery.
