"I think it's in society's self-interest to continue to legally protect heterosexual marriage," Cardinal George Pell of Sydney said.
Questioned about the prospects for legislation that would allow registration of civil unions between same-sex couples, the cardinal said that it would be a mistake to give such couples the legal benefits of marriage.
The Australian parliament has affirmed marriage as a union between a man and a woman, he pointed out, "and I support that."
The cardinal argued that society is best served by legislation through which "governments privilege the union of a man and a woman for them to have children, to remain faithful to each other and to look after those children."
