Canterbury archbishop clarifies Islam remarks

The Archbishop of Canterbury has moved to address the criticism he has received after suggesting that certain aspects of Islamic Sharia law should be adopted in Britain.

In a statement on his website, Dr Williams said he certainly did not call for Sharia law to be introduced as some kind of parallel jurisdiction to the civil law.

He also said his principal aim was to explore the broader issues around the rights of religious groups within a secular state.

All the main political parties, secular groups and some Muslims have expressed dismay at his earlier comments.

But Faizel Siddiqui, the head of the Islamic University in Warwickshire and a barrister, said people already had the right to settle disputes under Sharia law.
