An Australian bishop has charged that proponents of legal euthanasia are promoting not merely "mercy killing" for terminally ill patients but a "more generalized support for suicide and assisted suicide."
"Perhaps this reflects an inevitable slide in the logic of euthanasia campaigners," Bishop Anthony Fisher, an auxiliary of the Sydney archdiocese, said.
Bishop Fisher spoke out after Dr. Philip Nitschke, a veteran lobbyist for legalized euthanasia, announced that he would support the right of healthy people to assisted suicide.
The bishop remarked that anyone who has suicidal impulses needs psychological and spiritual help.
"The last thing we need in this situation are suicide zealots parading as doctors," he said.
