New decrees on causes for beatification, canonization

The Vatican's Congregation for the Causes of Saints has published a series of decrees advancing the causes of candidates for canonization and beatification.

The decrees - approved by Pope Benedict XVI on July 6 - attest to the authenticity of miracles performed through the intercession of 2 candidates for canonization and 5 for beatification; recognize an Italian martyrdom, and pronounce the "heroic virtue" of 8 people.

Specifically, the decrees:

Attest to miracles attributed to Blessed Gaetano Errico (1791- 1860), an Italian priest; and Blessed Maria Bernarda Butler (1848- 1924), a Swiss religious.

These 2 candidates have now fulfilled the requirements for canonization.

Attest to miracles attributed to Maria Rosa Flesch (1826- 1906), a German religious;

Candelaria de Sane Jose (1863- 1940), a Venezuelan religious;

Marta Maria Wiecka (1874- 1904), a Polish religious;

Giuseppina Nicoli (1863- 1924), an Italian religious; and

Ceferino Namuncura (1886- 1905), an Argentine layman.

These 5 candidates have now fulfilled the requirements for beatification.

Proclaim the martyrdom of Blessed Antonio Primaldo and his lay companions, who died in Italy in 1480.

Testify that the following candidates for beatification lived lives of heroic virtue:

Antonio Barbargio (1640- 1706), an Italian cardinal;

Luca Prassi (1789- 1866), an Italian priest;

Ignacia of the Holy Spirit (1663- 1748), a Filipino religious;

Leopoldina Naudet (1773- 1834), an Italian religious; Santina di Gesu Scribano (1917-1968), an Italian religious;

Emilia Schneider (1820-1859), a German religious;

Jerome Le Royer de la Dauversiere (1597-1659), a French layman;

and Hildegard Burjan (1883-1933), a German laywoman.

These candidates will now be in line for beatification if a miracle is attributed to their intercession.
