First Roman Catholic church built in Minsk since Bolshevik coup

A Roman Catholic church is being built in Minsk, the first such construction project in the Belarusian capital city since the Bolshevik coup in 1917.

The church is being constructed in the Serabranka neighborhood by the John the Baptist community with funds raised from its members and foreign donations.

The city executive committee permitted the community to start the construction this past spring.

The works began on June 15. The initial construction work involving the laying of the foundations and the connection of utility supplies is expected to be completed this year.

The walls are to be built next year.

Ihar Lashuk, priest of the Roman Catholic community, told BelaPAN that more than 200 million rubels had been spent on the project estimates and initial construction work.

He said that the community would appeal to authorities to exempt the construction from taxes, noting that this was the only help that they seemed to be able to render.

The church, designed by Minsk-based architect Alyaksey Yaromanka, will have 360 seats.

It will be 46 meters tall.

The building is being erected nearby a chapel whose construction also was initiated Br. Mr. Lashuk.
