A former Tory minister has compared the Government’s attitude towards the Catholic Church on gay adoption to persecution of Catholics under Queen Elizabeth I and Henry VIII.
Suffolk MP John Gummer speaking in the House of Commons yesterday, said discrimination against the Catholic Church was the opposite of toleration, adding that the Catholics (Prevention of Discrimination) Bill, that he intends to introduce would get rid of the “historic discrimination'” against Catholics, including the ban on the heir to the throne marrying into Catholicism.
