No Funding Thank You!! (Australia)

Sydney Catholic Education Office Director, Br Kelvin Canavan, has written to more than 180 Catholic schools advising that his office has decided not to support the Federal Government's new chaplaincy funding program.

According to the letter by Br Canavan, Catholic schools rejected a guideline that schools may engage more than one chaplain to reflect the diversity of the students, The Australian reports."This assumes that the school has not been established with a view to creating an environment of a specific religious character," he wrote.

"This may be the case for public schools but not for Catholic schools."The Catholic Education Office also rejected that the Department of Education and Training would monitor chaplaincy activities.

Under the three-year government program, schools would be able to apply for a $20,000 grant to employ a chaplain, conditional on them making a suitable appointment.
