Cardinal Giacomo Biffi (pic'd alongside), the often outspoken former Archbishop of Bologna, will lead this year’s Lenten Retreat for the Roman Curia, the Vatican has confirmed.The Italian prelate will deliver three meditations each day during the week-long retreat; his theme will be “the things of above.” The retreat also includes daily Mass and Benediction, Eucharistic adoration, and the Liturgy of the Hours.
The annual spiritual exercises, held in the Redemptoris Mater chapel of the apostolic palace, will begin on February 25, and conclude on March 3. Pope Benedict and the leaders of the Roman Curia will attend, and during the week all papal audiences will be suspended and work at the Vatican will slow to a standstill.
Cardinal Biffi served as Archbishop of Bologna from 1984 until his retirement in December 2003 at the age of 75.
During his tenure he developed a reputation for candor, often delivering pithy remarks on public issues.
