Gleeson to star in priest comedy

Brendan Gleeson has revealed he is to play a vilified priest in a new dark comedy with The Guard writer and director.

The Harry Potter star is teaming back up with John Michael McDonagh to make another film, Calvary, in which he will star as a misunderstood priest.

The story is inspired by the recent controversy surrounding the Catholic church.

Brendan revealed: "We both found the notion of a good priest being vilified by his community quite an idea, given what's happening and the way the whole attitude to the clergy has changed.

"So he's written a really beautiful little script. It's going to be a small budget movie but I can't wait."

Writer and director John revealed the film would be set in Ireland again and he is hoping it would not rain as much as it did while making police comedy The Guard with Don Cheadle.

He said: "We're hoping we'll shoot that late August 'cause I don't want to go back to Ireland when it's really rainy again. Although it's always raining, but hopefully we'll get the end of the summer next year."

John added: "We've just started going out to actors and my first choices are saying yes so fingers crossed it will actually happen. I think if we can get Don Cheadle to come to the west of Ireland we can get anyone to come to the west of Ireland!"
