Diocese of Lafayette places priest on leave amid decades-old misconduct claims

The Diocese of Lafayette has placed Rev. Barry Crochet on administrative leave after learning of allegations of misconduct dating back many years, according to the diocese’s Office of Communications.

According to the diocese’s website, Crochet is the pastor at St. Joseph Church and Our Lady of Victory Church, both in Loreauville.

Diocese officials said they reported the allegations to civil authorities and added Crochet will remain on leave while those authorities investigate.

“Recognizing the profound pain that such situations cause, our immediate prayers and deepest concerns are with all parties involved,” the diocese stated.

Diocese leaders explained that the decision reflects their commitment to transparency, safety, and justice.

Officials noted that Crochet, like anyone accused, is presumed innocent unless proven otherwise, but pointed out the well-being of the community and the integrity of the investigation remain the top priorities.

The diocese also asked the community to keep those affected in their thoughts.
