The former Freiburg auxiliary bishop Christian Würtz is officially bishop of Eichstätt.
As part of a solemn introductory service on Sunday in the cathedral of the city located in the Altmühltal valley, he was presented with the papal appointment certificate by the Apostolic Nuncio in Germany, Archbishop Hubertus van Megen.
He then traditionally sat on the Cathedra, the episcopal seat in the cathedral, in order to take possession of the diocese.
In addition, Würtz received the shepherd's staff as a visible sign of care for the faithful entrusted to him.
The 55-year-old is currently Germany's youngest diocesan bishop. He succeeds Gregor Maria Hanke in Eichstätt, who resigned early in June 2025 at the age of 70.
That in the 8. Century of the diocese, founded by the English-born missionary Willibald, counts more than 330,000 Catholics.
In Eichstätt, Germany’s only Catholic University is also based.
The celebration was attended by a lot of prominence from church and politics. Among them were Bavaria's Prime Minister Markus Söder and Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann (both CSU).
