A retired priest who was a resident at parishes in Chicago and the north suburbs is facing an allegation of sexual abuse of a minor in India, the Archdiocese of Chicago said.
The accusations involves Father Denis Manuel Carneiro, a retired priest of the Archdiocese of Bhopal, India, about 60 years ago in India, said Cardinal Blase Cupich, archbishop of Chicago, in letters to local parishes.
Cupich sent the letters to the following parishes, including the dates when Father Carneiro was a resident there:
- Our Lady of the Rosary Paris in Chicago, Illinois: July 1972 to May 1974, April 1979 to June 1979, and July 1989 to June 1999.
- Holy Family Parish in Inverness, Illinois: June 1999 to July 2002.
- St. Mary Parish in Buffalo Grove, Illinois: June 2004 to August 2004, November 2009 to May 2013, June 2013 to the present.
Father Carneiro also served as a chaplain at Ascension St. Alexius Hospital in Hoffman Estates, Illinois from 1999 to 2002, Cupich said.
"In keeping with our child protection policies, I have withdrawn Father Carneiro's faculties to minister and directed him to live away from parish premises. While he strenuously denies the allegation, he has complied with this direction. We have notified the Archdiocese of Bhopal which is responsible for conducting the investigation into the allegation," the letter from Cupich read in part. "Moreover, as is required by our child protection policies, we have reached out to the person making the allegation and reported the allegation to civil authorities."
The Archdiocese of Chicago did not provide further details about the abuse allegations.
