Concerns that locals won’t be buried in community as East Kerry graveyard at capacity

Families in East Kerry could be facing a situation where if a loved one dies, they can’t be buried in their local area.

That’s according to councillor Jackie Healy-Rae who was speaking at a recent meeting of the Castleisland-Corca Dhuibhne Municipal District.

He says the cemetery in Gneeveguilla is at capacity and people will have nowhere to be buried locally unless a resolution is found.

The motion was seconded by Fine Gael councillor Bobby O’Connell.

In response, the council advised the graveyard is not under its ownership and efforts to acquire land to extend it have been unsuccessful.

It added a nearby site in the village was not suitable for burials, and it’s investigating any available suitable options to develop a new graveyard.
