Nuns in Kuravilangad convent receive ration cards

Three nuns, including the survivor in the sexual abuse case against Bishop Franco Mulakkal, who reside at the St. Francis Mission Home in Kuravilangad were issued ration cards by the State government on Thursday.

The cards were handed over to the nuns at the convent by District Supply Officer Sajani B.

Speaking to the media, the complainant against the Bishop reiterated that the legal battle against him would continue.

The nuns, she said, had been leading an isolated life within the convent, struggling at times to meet even basic needs such as food.

Moved by their plight, Civil Supplies Minister G.R. Anil intervened and directed officials to issue ration cards to them.

The sequence of events dates back to 2018, when the survivor filed a police complaint after repeated attempts to seek redress from senior Church authorities allegedly failed.

Following this, five nuns, including the complainant, staged a sit-in protest in Kochi on September 8 the same year, drawing national attention.

A few days later, Bishop Franco Mulakkal, then head of the Latin Catholic Diocese of Jalandhar, was arrested.

The protest marked a watershed moment in the history of the Catholic Church in India, as it was the first instance of a group of nuns publicly challenging the authority of the Church hierarchy.

However, on January 14, 2022, a local court acquitted Bishop Franco Mulakkal, citing lack of evidence.

The verdict further deepened the isolation faced by the nuns within the Church.
