Donegal missionary priest using 90th birthday to help charities in Africa and at home

A Donegal missionary priest who is celebrating his 90th birthday has asked for donations to be made to charity in lieu of gifts.

Rathmullan cleric Fr Eddie Deeney, who was ordained in 1961, is marking his birthday with a celebration on Saturday, January 31 in the Rathmullan SVP Centre at 8pm.

The community is invited to join the special celebration to honour Fr Eddie Deeney, who spent most of his career as a missionary priest in Africa with the Society of African Missions (SMA).

In lieu of gifts, Fr Eddie has requested that if people wish, they can make a contribution to charity and a collection box will be available on the night.

Donations will be shared between the local Society of St Vincent de Paul, and the Tanga House Project for Albino Children in Tanzania.

Fr Deeney attended  St Joseph’s National School in Rathmullan and  St Eunan’s College in Letterkenny. He  worked mainly in Nigeria and South Africa and in later years in SMA parishes in London.

Following his retirement, he has written on various experiences that were part and parcel of his missionary journey.
