Cardinal Marx: Home must be open to newcomers

The Munich Cardinal Reinhard Marx warns against seeing homeland as complete and immutable.

"Everything should remain as it is, and no one new is to be added? This is not home to which the Bible speaks, but an ideology that revolves around itself and does not want to perceive the challenges of reality," said the Archbishop of Munich and Freising, according to his press office on Tuesday in the Upper Bavarian Erdweg.

"Home is a place of security, of manageability and common traditions, but not a closed place that does not have the strength to be a home to others and to welcome it."

Marx added that the longing for the homeland is important. But it should not stop and lead to a standstill. "Home is always a place where I look for the possibilities of life."

"Every day a step towards death"

The Cardinal stated that the Bible is a story of being on the road and the search for a new home.

"Both belong together. We are people who cannot stand still. Every day is a step towards death. We cannot go back, we can only go forward, to Christ.” All people were looking for a place where they could stop and find security. “Without love, we will starve and die of thirst on the path of our lives.”

According to Marx, the task of the Church is to shape the homeland from the spirit of the Gospel.

"The Church should be a place where the future of life is being considered. In which we do not want to stop and simply preserve everything, but where we create a homeland that does not exclude others – an open community that is on the road and at home at the same time.”

This is the secret that the Church should give to people.
