Vatican appoints judge in Rupnik case

A special court made up of men and women is to rule on the sex scandal surrounding the Slovenian artist and priest Marko Rupnik.

This was announced on Monday by the competent religious authority in the Vatican.

The five-member tribunal had already been appointed on 9 October. It consists of "women and priests who hold no office in the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith or in other Vatican authorities".

This is intended to "ensure the autonomy and independence of the tribunal, as in any judicial process", it said.

The Vatican did not initially disclose the names of the five people who will sit in judgement over Rupnik.

Proceedings despite statute of limitations

Rupnik (70) is accused by several women of having made them sexually submissive by exploiting his authority as a priest.

The Jesuit order confirmed in December that Rupnik was temporarily excommunicated in 2020 for sexual offences with adult women. Although the offences of which Rupnik is accused are time-barred under canon law, Pope Francis ordered in October 2023 that he should continue to be investigated.

As a mosaic artist, Rupnik has designed numerous churches and chapels around the world. In 2023, he was expelled from the Jesuit order "for disobedience", but remained a priest.

The diocese of Rome, where Rupnik worked for a long time, had already launched its own investigations in April 2023.

At the time, they were led by canon law professor Giacomo Incitti. He teaches canon law at the Pontifical Urbaniana University and is also a judge at the Court of Appeal of the Diocese of Rome.
