Spain’s national broadcaster RTVE has apologised after one of its programs described the growth of evangelical Churches as “worrying” and “dangerous”, following a backlash from religious groups and viewers.
According to Evangelical Focus, the controversy began after a recent episode of RTVE's afternoon show Directo al Grano aired a segment that used footage of evangelical congregations without consent and portrayed them in a negative light.
Evangelical Focus highlighted that the report mischaracterised evangelical Christians while referencing an isolated case involving an individual pastor.
Beatriz Ariño, RTVE's audience ombudswoman, said in a statement: “We are very sorry for your disappointment, and we fully understand your anger.”
She confirmed that the broadcaster had “taken note of the mistake” and reaffirmed its commitment to avoiding religious prejudice.
The program’s host, Marta Flich, issued an on-air correction, clarifying that the segment had intended to discuss “the spread of cultish messages by some pastors acting on their own” rather than the evangelical Church as a whole.
She apologised to those offended and pledged that future coverage of religious issues would be handled “with the utmost care.”
Daniel Hofkamp, director of Protestante Digital, wrote that the episode reflected “a biased and manipulated view of evangelicalism in Spain”, warning that such coverage risks stigmatising a growing faith community.
