The 67-year-old Nico Mantje married an Old Catholic woman on 1 October and was automatically suspended as a result, the portal "Kerknet" reported on Tuesday.
According to the report, Mantje himself has probably not converted.
The Haarlem-Amsterdam diocese responsible was "completely surprised" by Mantje's marriage.
Some in his former parish were probably aware of the news, while others were "surprised and disappointed".
No dialogue has yet taken place between the suspended priest and the diocese management.
No talk of a dispute
However, the diocese does not want to talk about a dispute.
According to a spokesperson, it is possible for a bishop to ask the Pope for a dispensation from priestly celibacy for one of his priests.
Bishop Jan Hendriks is still prepared to apply for such a dispensation for Mantje.
"Then the Roman Catholic Church could possibly recognise his marriage. Of course, it would have been better if he had asked for a dispensation first and only then got married."
However, there has been no contact with him recently and Mantje did not want to comment.
According to canon law, priests are required to "observe perfect and perpetual continence for the sake of the kingdom of heaven; they are therefore bound to celibacy". (Can. 277 CIC)
If a priest "attempts a marriage, even if only in a civil form", he "incurs the penalty of suspension; but if, despite warning, he has not come to his senses and continues to give offence, he is to be punished progressively with deprivation of rights or even with dismissal from the clergy". (Can. 1394 CIC)
A suspended priest may not exercise his power of ordination and leadership, for example, he may not administer the sacraments (Can. 1333 CIC).
