Diocese of Chester confirms Saughall priest banned from job

A CHESHIRE priest has been banned for three years after he was found guilty of misconduct.

Alan Dawson was a priest at All Saints Church, in Church Road, Saughall, but was last week banned by the Diocese of Chester after his original removal in June this year.

However, a spokesperson for the Diocese asserted that Mr Dawson’s behaviour was ‘not a safeguarding issue’ but that it was ‘unbecoming to the office and work of the clergy’.

They added that the decision was taken within the Diocese’s rules over behaviour and work in the clergy.

“The disciplinary case confirmed it is not a safeguarding matter.

“Alan Dawson was suspended from his post on June 19, 2025.

“Following a formal investigation and disciplinary process, he is being removed from office and prohibited from ministry for three years.

“The Church of England holds its clergy to the highest standards of integrity and conduct. Where those standards are not met, we are committed to taking appropriate action in accordance with the CDM and ensuring transparency and accountability.”

The spokesperson added that support would be on offer for those who may be affected by Mr Dawson’s removal from the church.

They added that prayers will continue to be offered to the congregation, also.

They said: “We recognise that this outcome may be upsetting for members of the parish and wider community.

“Pastoral support is being offered to those affected, and we ask for continued prayers for all involved.

“We are continuing to work with the churchwardens and PCC to provide for future ministry in the parish.”
