First appointment of a bishop under Pope Leo XIV

For the first time since the election of Pope Leo XIV, the Vatican has announced the appointment of a new bishop.

As the Vatican announced on Thursday, the Pope has appointed the Marist priest Miguel Ángel Contreras Llajaruna as auxiliary bishop of the diocese of Callao in Peru.

The 45-year-old was previously Episcopal Vicar for Consecrated Life in the diocese. He was also head of the South American region of the Marist Order.

Pope Leo XIV was elected the 267th Pope in the history of the Church last Thursday. Previously, Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost - his real name - had headed the Vatican's episcopal dicastery since 2023.

As prefect, he is therefore likely to have been involved in the selection of Llajaruna.

The new head of the Church is also likely to know the new auxiliary bishop's diocese well.

During his time as bishop of the Peruvian diocese of Chiclayo (2014-2023), he was also Apostolic Administrator of the diocese of Callao from April 2020 to May 2021.
