Much-loved shrine to Saint Brigid in Co Louth damaged by Storm Éowyn

Trees at the much-loved shrine of St Brigid near her birthplace in Faughart, Co Louth, have been uprooted by Storm Éowyn.

Local Councillor John Reilly has shared photos of the damage wrought by the devastating wind.

Several large trees have been uprooted blocking access to the upper part of the popular shrine.

One tree has fallen in front of the grotto to Our Lady of Lourdes, while others have fallen close to the Stations of the Cross.

This means that a massive clean-up operation will be needed to remove the trees ahead of St Brigid’s Day next Saturday, February 1.

Pilgrims from throughout the north east visit the shrine each year on St Brigid’s feast day.

Following the success of last year’s event organised for Brigid 1500, the Faughart Community Group are holding a medieval candlelit procession for Sunday February 2.

The plan is for an ancient style candlelit procession, led by female robed figures carrying a representation of Brigid followed by a lone drummer, to make its way from St. Brigid’s Shrine to Faughart graveyard.

A visit to the shrine is also included in the Pilgrim Walk from Faughart to Dundalk on Sunday February 2 as part of the Brigid of Faughart Festival and in the tour of sacred sites the following day.
