Waterford church gets green light for Columbarium area

Cremation is an increasingly popular option. Waterford Council has given the green light to St Mary's Church, above, to build a Columbarium to house urns containing the ashes of the deceased

A Waterford city church has received planning permission to build a Columbarium to house urns containing the ashes of people who chose to be cremated instead of buried.

Fr Liam Power, on behalf of the Parish of St Joseph, St Benildus and St Mary’s, lodged an application with Waterford City and County Council on December 6, 2023, for planning permission to construct a proposed Columbarium area and associated landscaping site works at the existing Cemetery in St Mary's Church, Knockboy, Ballygunner, Waterford.

A columbarium is a room, building, or a wall that is designated for the interment of the ashes of people who have died and been cremated.

The Council gave the go-ahead on January 29 this year, subject to two conditions.
