A man in his 20s is to appear in court today following being charged in connection with an attack on a priest in Waterford.

The assault took place at approximately 9.30am on Sunday, in the Ardkeen area of Waterford city.

The arrested man is to appear before Waterford District Court this morning at 11.15am.

A bishop has asked people to pray for the priest who was stabbed, and for the man who attacked him.

The priest, who is in his 30s, was treated in hospital throughout the day for what were described as serious but not life-threatening injuries but was well enough to return home later to continue his recovery.

In a statement, the Bishop of Waterford and Lismore, Alphonsus Cullinan, said: “I wish to thank all for their concern and ask that people remember him (the priest) in their prayers at this time as well as the person who perpetrated this crime."

The circumstances of and motive for the attack are unclear but the alarm was raised and the priest was taken to Waterford University Hospital for treatment for what are believed to have been stab or slash injuries.
