THE CATHOLIC PRIMATE of Ireland Diarmuid Martin says that he has no
plans to move to the Vatican – nor does he expect a call from the Pope.
Speaking to Pat Kenny last Monday on Newstalk FM, Martin said that recent
reports linking him with a post in the Vatican were wide of the mark.
“We have to get away from idle speculation,” Martin said, saying that
Pope Francis I will only make his decision known when he announces it,
such is his style.
“Those who are suggesting that they know this will know when it is done. I am very happy where I am and I’m 68 now.”
Martin added that though he spends some time in Rome now, he hasn’t been inside the Vatican “for some time now”.
“I believe that you do need younger people to go in.”
Martin was asked about the Church’s stance on gay marriage and
abortion, saying that people would expect the church not to compromise.
“Stressing your values with no compromise is what people would expect. Marriage isn’t a social construct. It is a very basic part of what we are. Then come children.”
